Surya tops table

S.A. Surya Kumar of PSG College of Arts and Science tallied seven points to claim top spot in the individual event of the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate chess tournament at the Hindusthan College of Arts and Science here on Saturday.

Around 280 students took part in the individual event and the top-eight finishers will represent Bharathiar varsity in the inter-varsity competition later this year.

Earlier, VLBJ College of Arts and Science clinched the team championship with 12 points from six rounds.

PSG CAS and Vasavi CAS, with 10 points apiece, finished in the next two places.

Final standings: Individual: Top eight: 1. S.A. Surya Kumar (PSGCAS) 7 pts, 2. K. Nandhakumar (SNMV) 7, 3. S. Sabarinathan (PSG) 6, 4. John Christopher (VLBJ) 6, 5. R.S. Soundariya (VLBJ) 6, 6. R. Dhamotharan (VLBJ) 6, 7. Sreeram K. Senthil (PSG) 6, 8. S. Athish (VLBJ) 6.

Team: 1. VLBJ 12 pts, 2. PSG 10, 3. Vasavi 10, 4. RVS 9.
