The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) helicopter on a routine surveillance sighted few iron drums floating at sea –7 kms south west of Korlai fort near Kashid beach, about 50 kms from Mumbai – on Saturday. On further reconnaissance, a total of 12 drums, each storing 200 Ltrs of Naphtha chemical, were retrieved. The helicopter crew investigated the nearest coastline and noticed a few drums reaching the shores.

The Coast Guard team led by the Commanding Officer ICGS Murud Janjira along with the local police officers of Revadanda reached the site and recovered nine drums along the shores of Barshivi, Kurali and Revadanda.

ICG spokesperson told Mirror, “The initial investigation revealed that the drums contained highly inflammable hydrocarbon product called Naphtha. However, there were no markings to identify as to which company the drums belonged nor the source of the drums could be ascertained.”

The Coast Guard Ship Achook on coastal security patrol off Mumbai was also diverted to ascertain situation at sea. The ICG in a joint effort with the local police were able to retrieve these drums and vigil is maintained for retrieval of the other drums afloat.

According to the defence officers, there is a high alert in the wake of Yakub Memon’s hanging and hence finding these drums is a cause of concern. MMB
