JNU hostel students raise a stink over garbage dump

Given the proximity of the dump, the stench of garbage is often unbearable, complain students.

Residents of Mahi-Mandavi Hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have gone on an indefinite hunger strike to demand that a garbage dump behind their hostel be shifted as soon as possible. The hostel residents have claimed that the dump has created acute health problems, with several students falling prey to dengue.

While all the garbage of the university has been dumped at the site for years, the hostel was constructed around 2002- 2003. Over the years, despite the construction of other hostels in the area, the garbage dump was not shifted.

“We have been asking JNU authorities to shift the garbage dump since the last one-and-a-half years but our request has fallen on deaf ears. We have written letters to everyone, from the vice-chancellor to the dean of students to the campus development committee, but they keep passing the buck,” said Dileep Kumar, hostel president.

Given the proximity of the dump, the stench of garbage is often unbearable, complain students.

Even the other hostels located nearby — Tapti, Lohit, Koyna, Chandrabhaga and Shipra — are affected by the problem.

Festive offer

But JNU authorities seem to be unclear about exactly whose job it is to shift the garbage dump.
