Britons Katie Archibald and Laura Trott could only finish sixth and eighth respectively as Italy's Barbara Guarischi took the honours in the RideLondon Grand Prix on Saturday.

The inaugural 2013 winner Trott and defending champion Giorgia Bronzini were unable to match Guarischi, who edged out the American Shelley Olds in a sprint finish over the 1.3-mile loop course around St James’s Park.

Trott was riding for her new team, British UCI Matrix Pro Cycling, and came into the race in good form having finished third in the national road race championships, but she was unable to provide the large crowd with a home winner they craved.

Velocio-SRAM rider Guarischi said: "This victory is amazing, but without my team it would have been impossible."

The race was marked by a nasty crash at the start of the final lap which left several riders spread-eagled on the ground just 15 metres from the finish line. Fortunately race marshals managed to clear the track in time for the thrilling denouement.

Olds' Ale Cipollini team-mate Annalisa Cucinotta was third with Bronzini in fifth place.
