CHANDIGARH: The police today claimed to have cracked a murder case with the arrest of a member of a gang that offered lift to people on highways and then loot them by offering them drinks laced with intoxicants.

The police today claimed to have cracked a murder case with the arrest of a member of a gang that offered lift to people on highways and then loot them by offering them drinks laced with intoxicants.

A spokesman said on April 12, the Sonepat police got information that an unidentified body was lying near the Devdu bypass. The police swung into action and on April 24, the deceased was identified as Ram Lal of Chalal village in HP’s Mandi district. The accused identified as Harikesh of Angrawa village in UP’s Sultanpur district was traced and arrested from Dwarka, Delhi.

The police said the accused had confessed to have committed the crime. Harikesh said and his accomplices, had offered lift to Ram Lal in Innova on the GT Road between Karnal and Delhi and given him intoxicants mixed in a beverage. They snatched his wallet, a ring and a mobile phone and crushed him under their car. The spokesman said the police had taken the accused on remand for seven days. The accused admitted three to four months ago, he and his accomplices had committed such incidents at Kothputli border on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, Mathura highway, Noida highway, Ghaziabad highway and Lalkuan-Delhi highway. —TNS
