Indoreans go on a shopping spree with the onset of festive and wedding season
You never need an excuse to shop. And when there are monsoon melas, attractive sales, the wedding and festive season round the corner, you really don’t need that extra push.
Indoreans are thronging the melas and markets in the city, which have attractive and fashionable items on offer. With jewellery, accessories, home decor items, paintings and footwear all under one roof, the crowd at the melas is proof enough that localites are going all out to indulge in some retail therapy.
Some of the melas around MG Road, Regal Square and Mahalaxmi Nagar among others, boast of exhibitors setting up authentic stalls of products from 15 states of the country. There is an array of authentic Jaipuri prints, silk from Bihar, cotton and handmade crafts from Kolkata, embroidered applique work from Uttar Pradesh and customers are completely spoilt for choice.
Festive fervour
The festive fervour is on and Indoreans are already geared up to shop for the upcoming festivals like Teej and Rakhi. The melas have stalls with varieties of colourful rakhis as well as bands and thaalis with minute carvings. The USP of these melas is that they bring something different from the usual market trends. As Paridhi Dungarwal, from Kolkata, said, “The collection at our stall is unique and is not easily available in the market, so buyers prefer to come to these melas and shop for the occasion.”

Shweta Jain, who was seen shopping for the festive season, said, “I have come with my daughter to shop and there are beautiful designer rakhis on display. One usually cannot find such lovely things on display and most of the products available at these melas are also easy on the pocket. Apart from this, most of things that I pick up are unique and are appreciated by all during the festive season.”
Shopping for D-Day
A stroll at these melas in the city will find blushing soon-to-be-brides shopping for their big day. Picking up bright and traditional jewellery and clothes to add to the wedding trousseau, the melas are flooded with people asking even for customised stuff to add to their kitty. Twenty-four-year-old Richa Joshi, a would-be-bride, revealed, “I always wanted a trousseau with collections from across the country. From a Banarasi sari to intricate Jaipuri work — I have hand-picked all the traditional crafts from across the country. The craftsmen at these melas have exactly what I am looking for and it is a pleasure to shop at such places.”
The craftsmen from different states who are displaying their crafts have found enthusiastic customers in Indoreans. No wonder then, that the melas are crowded with interested buyers. Apart from traditional craftsmen, most melas in the city have also become an encouraging space for budding designers.
Praveen Melwani, a designer from Nagpur, has brought some amazing short jackets that are creating quite a stir among young Indoris. The heavy designs with detailed craftsmanship are setting designer trends in the city. Nishi Agrawal, who is also shopping for her wedding, is quite smitten by these designer jackets and has picked up quite a few to wear with saris and cocktail dresses to give her the perfect diva look.
