BEXLEY, Ohio (AP) - The Drexel Theatre, a 1937 Art Deco cinema located just outside Columbus, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1I92hwo ) the East Main Street theater is the sixth Bexley site recognized as a historic place worthy of preservation.

The designation allows the theater to apply for state and federal tax credits to use toward future renovations.

A project planned for 2016 will revitalize the Drexel’s screening spaces, lobby and iconic marquee. In addition, a restaurant-lounge on the building’s east side will be restored and construction on new restrooms has already begun.

Friends of the Drexel, a nonprofit group, purchased the financially troubled theater in 2011. Since then, the group has spent about $500,000 on renovations.
