NAGPUR:
Satnam Singh Bhamara, the first Indian to have been drafted into the star-studded
National Basketball Association (NBA) League in the US, is coming home for the first time after scripting history in New York on June 25. Satnam's India visit will be a 10-day family affair.
"Yes, I am coming home," Satnam, who was picked up in the draft by
Dallas Mavericks, told TOI. Unaware of his exact travel itinerary, Satnam said, "Since I have not got the tickets in hand, I am not fully aware of my exact travel schedule.
Most probably I will be coming on August 5 at Delhi, then will go to my home via Chandigarh."
The 19-year-old, 7'2" tall hoopster from the remote Punjab village of Ballo Ke near Ludhiana added, "I have been informed to prepare myself for a 10-day visit to India and meet my family members. In a couple of days I will get the exact information."
Satnam's NBA breakthrough with the Mavericks in the 2015 draft night in New York was a new high for Indian sport. Satnam is now all excited about his home visit. "I don't have words to say how excited I am. On seeing my family members, maybe I will cry," Satnam said.
The Bhamaras, meanwhile, are a picture of joy at their residence in Ballo Ke in Barnala district after hearing the news of 'Chottu' coming home. Back home, not only family members but the neighbours too are eager to meet Satnam and know about his journey, informed father
Balbir Singh on Friday.
Satnam's 23-year-old sister,
Sarabjot Kaur said, "We all are very excited. He is likely to reach on August 6. We are planning to receive him at the New Delhi airport. After his arrival the first thing that we will do is to visit the gurudwara in our village and in coming days we will go to the Golden Temple in Amritsar."
It will be after over six months that Satnam will be coming home.
