District court awards life term to 42-year-old for murdering father

A 42-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his father by the additional district judge in Coimbatore on Friday.

COIMBATORE: A 42-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his father by the additional district judge in Coimbatore on Friday.
M Kanagaraj had murdered his father in his coconut farm located in Thalavaipalayam near Kottur in Pollachi in 2012 after the latter refused to give him money to buy alcohol.
Kanagaraj is already serving a seven year sentence for attempting to murder his mother five months after killing his father.

He has also been slapped with a six month sentence for threatening the witnesses in the case.
On April 1, 2012, Kanagaraj’s father, Mayilsamy Gounder, 65, asked him to leave his house as Kanagaraj was using up major portion of his income in buying alcohol.
Kanagaraj, an alcoholic, forced his father to give him money to buy more alcohol to which Mayilsamy Gounder refused and asked him to leave the house with his wife and daughter.
On April 2, at 6:30am, Kangaraj chased his father to the coconut farm and murdered him using a spade. His mother, M Chellamal, 60, got him out on bail in December.

But when his mother refused to transfer the property in his name, he attacked his mother with a sickle. She suffered injuries to her head, neck and legs.
Though she survived then, 47 days later, she died in her residence.
Kanagaraj was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on May 29, 2015 and was asked to serve an additional six months in jail for attempting to threaten the witnesses.
On Friday, the third additional district judge, B Karthikeyan sentenced him to life imprisonment and asked him to a pay a fine of Rs5,000, failing which he would have to serve another three months imprisonment.
He mentioned in his judgment that 13 witnesses were produced, 20 documents were examined and the murder weapon were produced in the court after which M Kanagaraj was found guilty.
Kanagaraj is already serving a seven year sentence for attempting to murder his mother five months after killing his father. He has also been slapped with a 6 month sentence for threatening the witnesses in the case.
