The mistake was fixed in an ‘emergency’ meeting of the Senate on Friday chaired by Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the university did not have the jurisdiction to extend the retirement age. He referred to a law passed on July 8, 2012 binding the deadline to 65 years for all universities, regardless of any other laws.

However, after anthropology department professor Islam took over as the first woman vice chancellor, the university’s Senate extended the deadline by two years on May 3, 2014.

A senior education ministry official, asking not to be named said, “The university authorities did not know that such a law existed. Without having proper grasp of the issue, they sat and extended the retirement age.

“A few days back, a discussion took place between government high-ups and teachers on this issue.”

In the end, the university fixed the ‘error’ through the ‘emergency’ meet.

A media statement said the rescinding would be effective from the date of the Senate’s decision to extend the date - May 3, 2014.
