After driest July in a decade, August to see better rain: IMD

Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that August will see better rainfall, giving a long range forecast of 92 per cent rainfall.

The city experienced the driest July in a decade with Santacruz receiving just 359.1 mm rainfall over the past month. This rainfall is less than half the mean total rainfall of 799.7 mm that the city usually receives in the month of July.

Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that August will see better rainfall, giving a long range forecast of 92 per cent rainfall.

“July was dry because both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal systems were not active, giving limited rainfall,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD.

In July, Colaba received a paltry 280.2 mm rainfall. The situation seems grim for the state as Marathwada is facing a 55 per cent deficit, while Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan are facing a 25 per cent deficit.

The only relief for the city is that rainfall over the catchment areas has been good, which will ensure sufficient drinking water for the citizens, added officials.

Festive offer

“While August can make up for the deficit, farmers are dependent on timely rainfall, which hasn’t happened so far, especially in Marathwada,” added Hosalikar.

On Friday, the maximum temperature was 30.3 degree Celsius, while at Santacruz, it was 31.5 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature on Friday at Colaba was 25.5 degree Celsius and at Santacruz, it was 25 degree Celsius.
