A historic steamship docked in southern Georgian Bay is getting a grant to help with restoration projects.

MP for Simcoe North, Bruce Stanton announced Friday that The RJ and Diane Peterson Keewatin Foundation will receive $480,000.

The money, made possible through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, is for the rehabilitation of the dock and adjoining land adjacent the S.S Keewatin in Port McNicoll.

“This project is a partnership between the community and our government that will help one of North Simcoe’s principal attractions to attract more visitors,” Bruce Stanton said in a release. “And share the unique role of the great lakes passenger vessels, like the S.S Keewatin, had in the settlement of Western Canada.”

This project comes as Canada prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
