In yet another incident of brutality by UP police, Station House Officer, Sub Inspector and two constables of Merapur police station in Farrukhabad were sent to the police lines after a video of them torturing a suspect surfaced Friday.

While the youth identified as Surjeet was held by policemen against a pillar two other policemen in plain clothes took turns in beating up the suspect with a leather strap which looked purposely kept in the police station for torturing suspects.Policemen in uniform, posted at the police station, are seen aiding their colleagues while the torture is on. The video also captured curious onlookers gathered to see the spectacle as the suspect continued to cry in pain.

Sources say the video shot using a mobile phone was recorded on 29th July, two days after suspects Surjeet, Umesh and Farid were picked up by the police. Their family says the youth were kept in illegal detention for over two days by the police on mere suspicion since Surjeet and his friends ran a mobile repair shop in the village.

What was more shocking was the fact that when the police could not find any evidence against the three it finally booked them for possessing illegal weapons and sent them to jail.

"The police treated him worse than animals even while my son kept pleading that he was not involved in the theft" said Surjeet's father Gangadeen. He also vouched that the police had framed the youth and that they were neither involved in theft nor possessed illegal weapons. Meanwhile as soon as the video got viral on whatsapp, was picked up by the media and reached senior police officials they finally took action. However instead of treating it as a case of serious human rights violation and right away suspending the policemen seen in the video, the district Superintendent of Police sent the errant cops to the lines.

"SO Merapur Saligram Verma, Sub Inspector Ram Sanehi and two police constables have been sent to the police lines and an enquiry has been ordered. Relevant action will be taken as soon as the report is prepared" said Farrukhabad SP Dinesh Kumar.
