India, Bagladesh to begin swap of enclaves from midnight

New Delhi, Jul 31 (UNI) At the stroke of midnight today, the exchange of enclaves between India and Bangladesh will begin fulfilling the decades long wish of the almost stateless people living in these land strips to become citizen of either of the country. As many 979 people living in India enclaves in Bangladesh have opted for India citizenship while none of living in Bangladeshi enclaves in India have opted for Bangladeshi citizenship. The swap would take place under the historic land boundary agreement signed between the two countries in 1975. The two countries signed the protocol for implementation of the agreement known as Indira-Mujib agreement in September 2011 during the visit of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka. There are a total of 162 enclaves which would be swaped. India would cede its sovereignty over 111 enclaves having an area of 17, 160 acres to Bangladesh, while the. 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India having an area of 7,110 acres would be treated as Indian territory. According to an estimate, as many as 37,000 people are living in Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 14,000 people living in the Bangladeshi enclaves in India. The issue of implementation of the 1974 accord had been hanging fire as India had not been able to ratify the agreement. However, after coming into power last year, the Narendra Modi Government made hectic efforts to arrive at a political consensus, and finally it was during the Budget session of Parliament that the historic accord was ratified by Parliament, heralding a new era of cooperation and mutual trust. The Centre has already announced a package of Rs 3,048 for rehabilitation of people affected by the exchange of enclaves. The passage of people to land of their choice would be arranged by the respective governments by November 30. The modalities of the complex process of settlement of immovable property have already been outlined by the two countries. UNI NAZ PY SY 2105
