Bangalore: ‘Cycle Day’ to be organised as a tribute to APJ Abdul Kalam

The event is expected to begin with a cycle rally around the 350 acres Yelahanka Lake (around 6.5 kms) followed by cultural events and traditional games for the children and families on the street.

The Yelahanka United  Environment Association (YUVA) in partnership with Directorate of Urban Land Transport, Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru  Coalition of Open Streets (BCOS) and Jalasiri Pratistana, Yelahanka are planning to organise ‘Cycle Day’ on August 2 from 6.30 am to 10.30 am as a tribute to former President late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The event is supported by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Police. Decathlon is the sports partner for this event.

Jagadeesh,secretary, YUVA, said the Cycle Day event is dedicated to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and poster exhibition is organised at the venue. “Cyclists will wear black armbands and observe two minutes of silence in memory of former President  late APJ Abdul Kalam at the start of the cycle rally,’’ Jagadeesh said.

According to Jagadeesh, the Cycle Day will be organised at Yelahanka Lake area near Kogilu Cross on Bengaluru International Airport Road. “ The Cycle Day is being organised with the objective of popularizing cycling within the locality thereby helping in reducing motorized traffic, reduce pollution, reduce fuel consumption and improve health and fitness of the individual apart from creating awareness on the importance of conserving lakes in Bangalore,’’ he said.

The event is expected to begin with a cycle rally around the 350 acres Yelahanka Lake (around 6.5 kms) followed by cultural events and traditional games for the children and families on the street. “Traditional games Chowka bhara, Kunte balle, Lagori, Marbles, snake and ladder, top spinning,  chess, gully cricket, badminton, volleyball, throw ball, Chess, blindfold and hit the target & slow cycle race will be organized. Kite flying festival will be an added attraction with colourful large designer kites,’’ he said.

Dance programs by the local children, yoga demonstration, cycle workshop, free basic health check-up, slow motion dance by Chetan and Troupe and high-end international bicycles display will be main attractions. ``Around 3000 cyclists, local citizens, school and college students  are participating in the event. Free cycle rentals will be also provided at the venue with original photo ID/school id as security deposit,’’ he said.
