TIME FOR SD TO SIGN OUT OF ILO?

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Please print this letter which is a reaction to an article which appeared in your esteemed paper dated July 21, 2015 (Time for SD to sign out of ILO - Moi Moi). I am sure you will agree with me that your readers and the people of Swaziland need to be informed on how some workers are treated in this country.

Look at the conditions of expatriate teachers in Swazi schools for example:
They are classified as temporary (casual) regardless of their degrees or experience and you know the implications of such status.
Their salaries are not entitled to change the notch or scale  (no matter how long they stay in Swaziland) stay the same.

They are not entitled to housing allowance and have to make their own accommodation arrangements.
At the end of their  one-year or two-year period, they have to start afresh as if they have just come from their country

No medical aid or gratuity

Surely how do you defend treating workers like this? Is it no wonder  therefore, that quality teachers leave Swaziland as soon as they can? Do we need ILO to come and correct such exploitation and mistreatment of workers. With or without ILO this is wrong and treating workers like this cannot be justified and defended. I have taken just the example of teachers because I have a teacher who taught me at a reputable high school a decade ago in  Mbabane and his salary is the same and I have overtaken him in salary.
