Cops ID Chanel heist suspect who allegedly rented getaway car

Cops have identified one of the thieves who pulled off the Chanel handbag heist on Madison Avenue — because he rented the getaway car in his own name, sources told The Post Thursday.

“Certainly not the most savvy criminal,” said a source.

The crooks strolled into the designer boutique Tuesday and snatched up 11 bags cumulatively worth more than $150,000.

But the men left five of the 11 purses in the back seat of their abandoned getaway vehicle, a red Kia Optima rented from Avis.

“We have some good leads,” the source said. “We have some suspects. There is video inside the store and it shows the larceny.

“They walk in, there are four of these guys, they don’t immediately go to the display case and steal the purses, but you can sense that they have a purpose.”

According to Chanel, its purses have nine-digit serial number stitched inside, which should give cops a better chance of identifying the bags if they surface online.

At the Madison Avenue store Thursday, burly security guards stood at both entrances.
