CHICAGO -- In need of infield depth, the Chicago White Sox acquired Justin Sellers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday for a player to be named later or cash. The move obviously is not considered to be the aggressive offensive upgrade the White Sox are looking for, per Twitter reports Thursday from both USA Today and CBSSports.com. Sellers was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte, taking the roster spot of second baseman Micah Johnson, who was placed on the disabled list after leaving Thursday’s game with a left hamstring strain. Sellers, a sixth-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2005, recently was outrighted by the Pirates and sent to Triple-A Indianapolis. The 29-year-old started the season on the disabled list with an Achilles tendon injury and did not play a game in the major leagues for the Pirates. Sellers has 99 games of major league experience from 2011-14, last playing for the Cleveland Indians. He has played second base, third base and shortstop, getting his most action at shortstop (56 games). He is a career .198 hitter with a .280 on-base percentage. He appeared in parts of three seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, seeing time in a career-best 36 games during the 2011 season.
