Power shutdown

There will be no power supply from 9.45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday in the following areas of the city owing to maintenance work to be taken up by the Tangedco at the Ambikapuram sub-station: Ariyamangalam, Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Golden Rock Defence Colony, Ambikapuram, Rail Nagar, Nehruji Nagar, Rajappa Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar, Malaiyappa Nagar, Kattur Pappakurichi, Kailash Nagar, Sakthi Nagar, Balaji Nagar, Mela Kalkandarkottai, Keezha Kalkandarkottai, Alathur, Venkateswara Nagar, MGR Nagar, parts of Kottapattu, Thiru Nagar, Adaikala Annai Nagar, Nathamadipatti, Keezhakurichi, Ponmalaipatti, Ponneripuram, Senthaneerpuram, and Sangilandapuram.

Applications invited

Applications have been invited from eligible persons and self-help groups for availing subsidy under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme. Entrepreneurs and SHGs are extended credit up to Rs. 25 lakh for starting small scale ventures with 25 to 35 per cent subsidy. Eligible persons can apply before August 10, an official release said. Those starting ventures in urban areas can contact the District Industries Centre and for ventures in rural areas the applicants can get in touch with the Assistant Director, Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board, near Railway Junction, in the city, the release added.

‘Issues papers

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Movement has urged the State government to take steps to issue all Revenue Department certificates free of cost. In a resolution adopted at its meeting held here recently with J. Selvaraj, president in the chair, the organisation pointed out that applicants now had to apply through the public service centres for obtaining certificates such as income, community, and other certificates on paying Rs. 50. The certificate should be issued free of cost by the Revenue Department offices, it said and threatened to launch an agitation if the demand was not conceded.

‘Call meeting on

transport issues’

The welfare organisations of Tiruchi has urged the district administration to convene an exclusive meeting to redress grievances relating to transport. In a representation to the Collector, the organisation said the city and the district were faced with problems with respect to transport such as poor bus connectivity to certain areas, over-speeding of buses and lorries, refusal of autorickshaw drivers to use meter fares and indiscriminate use of air horns. An exclusive meeting should be convened to address these issues, it said.
