The Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) as well as swamis of various Veerashaiva mutts took out processions separately in the city on Thursday, asking the government to initiate steps and chalk out plans to prevent farmers from committing suicide.

The CITU, as part of its nation-wide protest, staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here urging both the governments to adopt pro-farmer policies.

Referring to the series of suicide by farmers in the country and particularly in State, the CITU leaders criticised the Union Agricultural Minister for talking lightly on a very serious issue.

CITU, in a memorandum addressed to President of India, has demanded proper marketing facilities, withdrawing subsidies on agricultural inputs, payment of Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the family of the bereaved farmer and initiating all necessary steps to protect agriculture.

The swamis of various Veerashaiva mutts, led a procession to appeal to the farmers not to commit suicide and prevail upon the government to initiate steps to instil confidence among farmers. They were of the common view that the government had a responsible role to play in this regard.
