Talk about bad karma.
A local transient with a history of theft allegedly broke into a downtown business last week and stole $400 in cash, including $100 from the “cancer research fund” jar, according to a police report.
Kevin Rutter, 45, was caught on video surveillance breaking in to Aspen Brewing Co., 304 E. Hopkins Ave., about 4:46 a.m. July 21 and taking the money, according to a report by Aspen Police officer Ritchie Zah. Officers located him Wednesday, arrested him for burglary and theft and took him to the Pitkin County Jail.
On Wednesday, prosecutor Andrea Bryan asked Judge Gail Nichols to increase Rutter’s bond from $5,000 to $10,000 because of previous convictions for motor vehicle theft in 2008, theft in 2009, attempted burglary in 2010 and petty theft in 2014. Nichols agreed.
