Legislators across party lines exercise restraint inside and outside the Vidhan Bhawan

A senior home department official said, “The law and order, which was the biggest challenge to the government, was being personally monitored by Fadnavis.”

Late Thursday evening, Fadnavis told the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, “Yakub Memon was hanged at 7 am at Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday.”

He added, “The body was handed over to the relatives of the Memon after it was flown to Mumbai. The last rites were performed in the evening, complete with religious rituals at Bada Kabrastan at Chandanwadi.”

Reiterating that the execution of death sentence was first pronounced by the TADA court last April, Fadnavis said, “The mercy petition that was repeatedly filed by the lawyers of the convict was heard by the apex court, which convened a special sitting well past 2 am Thursday. The process went on till after 5 am.”

Elected members across party lines displayed complete restraint inside and outside the Vidhan Bhawan.

Interestingly, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi and MIM MLA Waris Pathan, who were vocal against the death sentence a day earlier, appealed to the people to ensure peace in the state and not react to the development.
