CHENNAI: Nineteen teachers of Tamil Nadu's oldest college for women, Women's Christian College (WCC), will get their salaries and other service benefits, with the Madras high court asking the Directorate of Collegiate Education to give provisional approval for their appointment.
Justice D Hariparanthaman granted the relief saying aided institutions were catering to the needs of the poor students for a meagre fee or free of cost, while self-financing colleges were collecting huge fees.
"Hence, whenever vacancies arise due to retirement/resignation, those vacancies shall be filled immediately with qualified teachers and authorities shall accord approval immediately, as it is not fair to extract work from teachers without paying them salary," he said a recent order.
The matter relates to the appointment of 19 assistant professors in various disciplines for vacancies. The college said though the University of Madras granted approval for educational qualification of these candidates, the director and joint director of collegiate education were delaying approvals. Approval for the appointment is a precondition for government grant-in-aid.
"Here is a case where teachers are appointed in regular vacancy and they have been working for the past six to seven years. Though the university has approved the appointment, the director and joint director of collegiate education are yet to approve it. In view of this there shall be an order of interim direction," said Justice Hariparanthaman.
