COIMBATORE: The civic body seems to be showing no signs of levelling the manholes on Alagesan Road and Raja Annammalai Road, causing problems for motorists since February when they were opened to repair the underground drainage.
After completing the underground drainage work, the civic body failed to level the manholes with the road. Instead, the manholes were elevated one feet above the road level.
This started causing problems for motorists, especially cars, tempos and autos. Corporation commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan was not available for comment.
While in Raja Annamalai Road, the manholes stand above the road level, on Alagesan Road, they have led to an undulated stretch. Anish Kumar, a frequent traveler on both roads said, "A two-wheeler may be able cross the stretch without being inconvenienced by the manholes, but driving a car poses huge risk, more so during the night. Motorists unfamiliar with the road are prone to accidents".
A grocer on Raja Annamalai Road said that tempos and autos carrying vegetables find it tough to cross the stretch because of the elevated manholes. "The road is 40feet wide, and the manholes are at the centre of the road. Vegetable baskets have toppled onto the road on several occasions," said the grocer.
R Sheshadiri, a 78-year-old resident of the area said that senior citizens were at greater risk. "I am always more cautious when riding my bike on Raja Annamalai Road," he said.
