Padma Wadkar: My mother was the reason I started learning music

The sugar-voiced Padma Wadkar was a contestant on a reality singing show and then a music teacher on another one, not surprising, since she started taking vocal lessons since the age of eight.
"My mother was the reason I started learning music. It took a while for me to develop self-interest. Around the time I was 14, I was a dedicated student. I haven’t looked back since.I am still learning each day. This journey eventually led to my marriage with a great soul," says Padma of her husband, singer Suresh Wadkar who she married in 1998. She has mainly been committed to teaching classical music all these years.
“The infinite and unconditional love from my students is a bonus. These are my achievements,” she says. In this age of overexposure, Padma listens only to Indian music, so her favourites are from the various gharanas of our rich classical heritage, the most impactful being her husband. With the focus now on bringing out her own songs, Padma is all poised with the romantic album Morey Piya, composed by Shreyas Puranik. “I have been addicted to Shreyas’s composition for years now. I kept recording his songs simply because I loved them,” she says. Some songs are classical-based and others are on the lighter side. All the songs are essentially around my genre of singing. Over a period of time, I have realised that I am happier to better what I am good at rather than sound wannabe with vain attempts at all genres,” signs off Padma.
