Luxury Pretoria hotel concerned about shooting incident

Pretoria - Management of the luxury Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria on Thursday expressed concern about a shooting outside its premises in which a guest was wounded.

"We are obviously very concerned by this incident outside the hotel and are working with authorities in their investigation," regional director of sales and marketing Sanet Fagan told News24.

"The hotel is doing what we can to assist the guest and hopes for a speedy recovery."

She was not able to give details of the incident, referring questions to the police.

The Sheraton Hotel is in Arcadia and, according to its website, boasts a "splendid view over Pretoria's famous Union Buildings, official seat of South Africa's government".

Gauteng police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu said three Congolese nationals, who were arriving at the hotel from OR Tambo International Airport, were robbed at gunpoint around 20:00 on Wednesday night.

The suspects, driving a silver Audi A3, robbed the guests of their luggage, two laptops and four cellphones.

"Before they could enter the hotel premises, they were confronted by the suspects," Mngomezulu said.

"The suspects fired several shots at them and wounded one in the upper body."

Earlier, paramedics said they had attended to a shooting at the hotel on the corner of Wessels and Church streets.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said when paramedics and police arrived on the scene, the wounded man was found in the reception area of the hotel.

He had been shot in the head.

"When paramedics assessed the patient, they found him in a serious condition, yet fully conscious," said Meiring.

The man was treated on the scene, before being taken to Muelmed Hospital.
