BELAGAVI: With the
Supreme Court allowing states to release life convicts with certain riders, 86 inmates at the Hindalga Central Jail here who have completed 14 years of imprisonment get a chance to be set free. Due to good conduct, their names have been recommended to the government.
If the government gives its nod, these inmates will be released on the Independence Day.
All these inmates are curiously looking towards decision of the governor now and if all goes well, they will be freed on the occasion of coming Independence Day. Recommendation list has already sent to the government on behalf of jail authorities.
A committee, headed by deputy commissioner N Jayaram and comprising the SP, district judge and social workers, recommend the release of 86 inmates after interviewing them.
According to B V Mulimani, assistant superintendent of the jail, three of them are suffering from mental illness.
Their names were recommended after getting guarantee from their family members.
During the tenure of the
HD Kumaraswamy government, some inmates at the jail were released based on their good conduct on the occasion of golden jubilee year of Karnataka's unification.
The process was discontinued thereafter. Demanding their release, inmates held several protests inside Hindalga jail.
Many times government showed interest but the Governors did not.
