Narmada dam overflows (video)

Bharuch

Narmada dam at Sardar Sarovar site in Kevadia colony is overflowing now. However the overflow is very narrow in just 2-4 cm measurement and therefore not so scenic. Such narrow overflow doesn’t cause flood. It is just able to make downstream area of river Narmada bit richer.

Narmada dam overflows at 121.92 meter level. The dam site was receiving water for last five days due to heavy rain in neighboring Madhya Pradesh state.

The dam site attracts thousands of visitors and traffic jam situation when it overflows. Entire Gujarat gets excited about Narmada dam’s overflow because this dam provides drinking and irrigation water to major part of central Gujarat, Ahmedabad, north Gujarat, Kutch and Saurashtra through very big pipeline and canal network.

PTI repors from Vadodara: Due to heavy rains in the catchment area and inflow of water from rivers in Madhya Pradesh the water level of Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river has reached 121.92 metres, a senior official said today.

“This is for the first time that water level in the dam has reached 121.92 metres this monsoon,” said R G Kanungo, In-charge of Sardar Sarovar dam.

He said the rise was due to inflow of water from Indira Sagar dam and other rivers located in Madhya Pradesh.

“The water level is stable at the dam. Current inflow of water from Madhya Pradesh is around 52,900 cusecs,” Kanungo added.

Incessant rains are lashing Gujarat since last couple of days, resulting into deaths of 22 people in rain-related incidents so far.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Power and Finance Minister Saurabh Patel said that rains have brought down the power demand in state to 8600 MW from 14800 MW few days back.

He said the demand for power from agriculture sector too has slumped to less than 10 million units per day today from 85 million units a few days ago.
