SHILLONG: A grief-stricken Meghalaya has mooted a plan to observe July 27 as ‘Kalam anniversary’ to honour the memory of the
departed President.
Chief minister
Mukul Sangma made the suggestion while addressing a public condolence meet organized by the
state government at the U Soso Tham auditorium on Wednesday. Cabinet ministers, legislators, senior government officials and school and college students, including some from IIM-Shillong, attended the meet and paid floral tributes to Kalam.
“The state should have a beautiful programme on his death anniversary every year. This will give an opportunity to our young
friends to remain connected with the ideas of such a great man,” Sangma said. The
chief minister also quoted a few lines from ‘Wings of Fire’, one of Kalam’s books. “The fact that he was here, with the people he loved to be around, gives us an opportunity to connect to his ideals,” an emotional Mukul said.
