In a politically significant move, Vellappally Natesan, general secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Mr. Natesan said he discussed the “problems faced by the majority Hindu community in the State’’ and sought their unity. He added the organisation was ready to work with anyone who would protect the interests of Hindus.
“Why should there be untouchability towards the BJP, which is the ruling party of the country? In Kerala, we want unity of majority community, because other political forces are ignoring the cause of the majority community,” he said after the meeting.
He said while SNDP members have in the past contested local polls as candidates of different parties, there was no problem with people contesting for the BJP.
He was accompanied by his son Tushar Vellapally, vice president of the SNDP.
“We discussed the problems faced by the majority community in Kerala. We feel that the majority community should unite,” Tushar told PTI.
Sources said the BJP central leadership is keen to strike a partnership with the Yogam in Kerala, as the party gets singled-out between the Left and the Congress in the State. Sources add that the RSS and VHP leadership also wanted such an alliance of the majority Hindus in Kerala, where the BJP is trying to get a political foothold.
Kerala BJP unit chief V. Muraleedharan, however, said the meeting should not be given any political overtones. — PTI
