K.B. Prasanna Kumar, MLA, has said that the officials of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board (KUWSSB) and the Shivamogga City Corporation will soon undertake a survey for upgrading drinking water supply system and construction of new overhead tanks in the city.
He was speaking at a meeting with engineers and valve-men working attached to the drinking water supply section of the city corporation here on Wednesday. The work of laying a new pipeline from Gajanur reservoir, the source of water for Shivamogga, to K.R. Waterworks in the Mandli locality, where the water is purified, has already commenced.
The project is estimated to cost Rs. 25 crore and it is likely to be completed by March, 2016. An action plan would be drawn up for laying new pipelines in other parts of the city, he said.
The valve-men who spoke at the meeting said that at present, the drinking water to the Government McGann Hospital, bus terminal of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and government offices in the vicinity was being supplied through the pipeline from which the water was being drawn to the booster pump house located at Kuvempu Road from K.R. Waterworks. They said, as the number of water connections in the city had increased in recent times, it was essential to establish a dedicated pipeline from K.R. Waterworks to the booster pump house.
Fine mooted
The valve-men said that a fine should be imposed on public who wasted water. They requested for construction of new overhead tanks at Kuvempu Road, B.B. Street and Urgadur localities in the city to ensure regular supply of drinking water.
Mayor Mangala Annappa, Deputy Mayor H. Palakshi and Commissioner A.R. Ravi were present.
