A CBI inquiry has been ordered by the Union government into the alleged irregularities in the appointment of former Aligarh Muslim University registrar Shahrukh Shamshad, who had resigned last year following the controversy.

Confirming the development, AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said, “A CBI inquiry has been ordered and the university has also received a letter. The CBI officials had also visited AMU in this regard recently.”

Citing health grounds, the registrar had resigned in September last year. But two hours later, he had tried to retract it, claiming that he had been “forced to resign under duress”. V-C Lt Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah had, however, refused to accept Shamshad’s request to cancel the resignation.

Notably, taking cognizance of a representation by former AMU students’ union president Shahzad Alam ‘Barni’, the under-secretary to Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Mahitab Singh, had last year sent a representation to Union Ministry of Human Resource Development urging “appropriate action” with regards to the complaints in the appointment of the registrar.

Using special powers, the V-C had appointed Shamshad on ad-hoc basis on May 17, 2012, and the post was advertised a month later on June 16. But, Alam had alleged that as per an RTI reply, instead of 45 days given to respond to the advertisement, it was extended to two months as Shamshad did not meet the mandatory criteria of having a Master’s degree and was waiting for his “fake” degree to arrive.

The registrar had said that he did extend the date but maintained that the degree which he was waiting for was genuine. RTI replies further showed that Shamshad received his Master’s degree from the controversial Sikkim-based Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management (EIILM), on August 27, 2012, which was after his appointment as Registrar.
