Crawley have signed former Birmingham goalkeeper Callum Preston on a one-year contract and fellow teenage stopper Freddie Woodman on loan from Newcastle.

Preston, 19, has been training with the Town squad throughout pre-season and played in all their friendlies so far.

The Wales Under-19 international was released by Birmingham in June when his contract expired. Last season he had a loan spell with National League side Telford.

Town boss Mark Yates told the club website: "Callum has done well in pre-season, impressing us with both his ability and his attitude. We're pleased to have him with us.

"He is a young goalkeeper with a big future and we are looking forward to working with him this season and him improving his game in our environment."

Meanwhile Woodman, 18, has agreed a deal to stay at the Broadfield Stadium until January 2.

Woodman has yet to make his senior debut for the Magpies but was on the bench on a number of occasions last season and played in pre-season friendlies against Gateshead, Sacramento Republic and Portland Timbers.

Yates told the club website: "We are delighted to have been able to bring one of the best young goalkeepers in the country to the club.

"The only thing Freddie lacks at the moment is experience in league football and that is what this loan spell with give him.

"He has all the attributes to become a top-class keeper and I have to thank everyone at Newcastle for letting us have Freddie for the first half of the season."
