On a varied path

New-age subject

Actor Sumalatha Ambarish is back on the big screen, thanks to some interesting projects, that are coming her way. Sumalatha was sure that she didn’t want to work on regular projects with predictable storylines.

“I think I’ve done enough films that have explored a lot of different subjects. I now have the urge to try something different,” Sumalatha says.

And there’s a double bonanza for Sumalatha’s fans because she will not only be sharing screen space with her actor husband Ambarish in ‘Doddamane Huduga’ after a long time, but she will also be essaying a role that she has never donned before in ‘Bhale Jodi’.  “In ‘Doddamane Huduga’, Ambarish and I play husband and wife. It’s a family-oriented subject,” she adds.

Sumalatha points out that it is the strong subject of ‘Bhale Jodi’ that impressed her. The film deals with a lot of new-age issues that occur in every household. “It deals with the many complications that people in love have to go through, it also delves into parent-child relationships and has a lot of points that youngsters can relate to,” she adds. Sumalatha plays the mother of actor Sumanth Shailendra in the film.

“I manage a house and also hold a regular job with a non-governmental organisation. I have a substantial contribution in the film because I portray two sides to the character — one as a mother of a son who is of this generation and then as a woman who is multi-tasking between proving herself at work and managing the house,” she shares.

She feels the subject of relationships has been dealt with in a sensitive manner. “There’s a scene in the film where my son is caught in a problem. I ask him to snap out of depression rather than brood. I feel this is how parents must help their children move on rather than dwell on their problems,” explains Sumalatha. She feels that the Kannada film industry has improved a great deal when it comes to the choice of subjects.

“The Kannada film industry is breaking away from exploring the usual commercial subjects and has started working on topics that are relevant today. This is a good change,” she concludes.
