New Measure: Odisha to scrap driving licences of 3-time offenders

To strengthen enforcement of traffic rules on the ground, the transport department has decided to get volunteers to assist transport officials.

Concerned over the rising cases of road accidents in the state, the Odisha government has decided to cancel the driving licences of individuals booked for three road accidents in one year.

Sources in the state transport department said that at a recent meeting it was decided that that the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) will be given a list of serial offenders —who have violated traffic rules over the last three years — by the Inspector General (IG) of the state CID. The data will then be entered into the transport department’s SARATHI software database and used to keep track of the drivers involved in road accidents.

To update all current violations, access to the SARATHI software will be given to SPs and deputy commissioners.

The latest state government move came in the wake of a CAG report, which slammed the government for increasing cases of deaths due to road accidents in the state.

Meanwhile, the transport and commerce department has also been asked to identify spots on different roads vulnerable to accidents in Odisha, using inputs from the police.

Festive offer

The government has made it mandatory for all dealers selling two-wheelers to supply helmets along with the vehicle to the buyers as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. To strengthen enforcement of traffic rules on the ground, the transport department has decided to get volunteers to assist transport officials.
