The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition rumours continue to swirl about Apple doing research and development on electric cars. Globe columnist Chris Umiastowski writes last week, Bloomberg columnist Barry Ritholtz wrote that gas-powered cars are "the walking dead who have not realized they are goners." Apple has probably been impressed with what Tesla has done with limited capital. More important, they see the rest of the car industry doing next to nothing in terms of new technology. Cars are much more sophisticated when it comes to software, while electric cars are simpler and more reliable. Apple is already doing software for cars called CarPlay, so why not at least consider the much bigger move of designing entire cars? With $150-billion (U.S.) in cash, Apple has seemingly infinite capital and a powerful reputation thinking differently and launching the best products in their category. BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis once said the car is the ultimate mobile accessory. Internet-connected electronic devices are a big part of our life and so is driving. They fit together naturally. Do not expect the big car companies to win the tech game. They are too slow and risk-averse.
