Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has expressed his sorrow at the death of Vanuatu's former Prime Minister Edward Natapei, the Fijian government announced Wednesday.

In a message of condolence to his Vanuatu counterpart Sato Kilman, Bainimarama described Natapei as a great leader of Vanuatu whose death is a tragedy not only for the country but for his family and colleagues, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

"While we sometimes had diverging views, I always regarded Mr. Natapei as someone who had the interests of his country at heart," Bainimarama said.

Natapei died of an asthmatic attack early Tuesday at the age of 61.

Natapei was elected as Vanuatu's prime minister on three separate occasions: 2001-2002, 2002-2004, and 2008-2010. Besides, he occupied various other positions, notably including as speaker of parliament.

At his death, Natapei was leader of the opposition and president of the Vanua'aku Party.

A state funeral is expected to be held for him. Endi
