Medical and paramedical colleges may raise their cut-off marks by 4-5% for students this year, according to a report in a leading new daily. This may be a result of the hike in CBSE cut-off this year.

In Gujarat, admissions for medical courses began on Monday and two medical colleges in Surendranagar and Karamsad agreed to surrender their management quota to the Admission Committee for Professional Medical Courses.

Officials of the committee said that BJ Medical College's cut-off was 3.5% higher this year with a cut-off of 93.45%, the report says. In Vadodara Medical College the rise in cut-off  saw admissions end at 92.23% in comparison to 88.95% last year.

Himmatnagar Medical College, which was the last medical college to allot seats this year, ended the admissions at 86.93% for CBSE students. Officials said that seeing the increase in cut-off year after year, there might be a 5-7% increase in cut-off for general category students too.

Meanwhile, for engineering courses the report says that officials of ACPC have confirmed there will be no third round of admissions for vacant seats for Bachelor of Engineering this year. The report quotes figures of vacant seats. It said that only 46,062 students were allotted seats after the first round, from which only 31, 991 students have confirmed admission. The second round of admissions also left  22,742 seats vacant. The number of vacant seats is likely to increase.

A third round of admissions will be announced only if there are quite a number of vacant seats left over, but only for government colleges only. The self-financed colleges may enroll fill in vacancies as they see fit, including students who have not appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination.
