Kashi shared a special bond with Kalam

VARANASI: Former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was associated with the seat of learning since 1991 and made umpteen visits to the holy city.
In 1991, Dr Kalam, then the director of Defense Research Development Laboratory, Hyderabad, had visited BHU to deliver convocation address at Institute of Technology, BHU (now, IIT-BHU). During the function, he was introduced to the audience by the then Maharaja of Banaras, Vibhuti Narayan Singh who said that he had come to land of the Ganga at Kashi from Rameswaram Agniteertam.

Kalam’s next visited the city at the 88th convocation of BHU on Mar 3, 2006 when he was the President of India. During his convocation address, he had asked the students to dedicate themselves to the service of nation and take responsibility of India’s socio-economic development. He had also administered oath to students to commit that they will teach five persons to read and write as a part of social service.
In 2007 he again visited the city as visiting professor at BHU. His next visit was on March 6 in 2008 as the guest on 13th convocation celebration of Central University of Tibetan Studies at Sarnath.
In 2012, he visited the city on December 27 to inaugurate the three-day 20th Children Science Congress. On July 10, 2013, he was the chief guest at the first convocation of Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT-BHU) where he rewarded 13 IITians. During his address, he shared his thoughts on the ‘Convergence of technologies for rural transformation’. He highlighted the importance of research culture in Indian institutes and Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) in creating sustainable enterprise models at rural levels, suggesting IIT-BHU to implement one such complex covering 50-100 villages on outskirts of Varanasi.

Dr Kalam had visited Jaunpur on November 22, 2014 as chief guest at 22nd National Children Science Congress. During his address, he said with an overall development of UP, development of nation is possible as the state the densely populated and income is low.
He stressed that for development three things including social participation, plantation mission and feeling of brotherhood among all is important.
Dr Kalam had visited Azamgarh on May 12, 2012 to inaugurate a private hospital in Azamgarh. After the function, he had stopped by at Rani Ki Saray Bazaar to take a sip of tea at a makeshift stall.
