The Fifth Additional District Judge of Coimbatore M.N. Senthil Kumar on Tuesday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for murdering 88-year-old neighbour and stealing three sovereigns gold jewellery from her on January 25, 2013. A fine of Rs. 3,000 was also imposed on her.
The woman who committed the murder has been identified as M. Saraswathi (34) from Thoothukudi who was a neighbour of the victim.
The victim Perumalammal, resident of Kannampalalyam near Sulur, was alone at home when the accused M. Saraswathi of Thoothukudi stabbed her on the neck with a knife and fled with the jewellery.
Sulur Police arrested Saraswathi and booked her under section 449 (house trespass to commit offence), 392 (robbery) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Fifth Additional District Judge sentenced her to seven years imprisonment and Rs. 1,000 each for charges proved under sections 449 and 392 and life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1,000 for charges proved under section 302 of IPC. Saraswathi was lodged in the special prison for women here.
