Amritsar: Lauding the police action in the Gurdaspur terror attack, Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa today stressed the need to equip the state police with modern weaponry to deal with such situations.

Bajwa said that the Punjab police was short on safety equipment like bullet proof jackets and helmets but still they put up an exemplary show against the terrorists who were eliminated by the forces in a day-long operation yesterday.

However, when proper equipment was available, the risk to the fighting force could be minimised, he noted.

The Congress leader visited the Guru Nanak Dev hospital here where four injured have been admitted. He also paid a visit to the civil hospital in Gurdaspur where the body of slain SP(Detective) Baljit Singh has been kept and offered his condolences to the family members.

He demanded that the son of the martyred SP must be absorbed in the police force on compassionate ground against the rank of his father.

Bajwa also bated for awarding the bus driver and railway employees who averted major disasters.

An assistance of Rs 1 lakh each should be provided to the civilians who were injured in the attack, he demanded.

In a major terror attack, three fidayeen, believed to have come from Pakistan, yesterday attacked passengers in a moving bus and stormed a police station at Gurdaspur district in Punjab, killing seven persons, including an SP, while all the terrorists were gunned down after a day-long operation.
