'Slash' role awaits, but Terrelle Pryor has to make the Browns as a receiver

BEREA, Ohio -- When the Cleveland Browns open training camp on Thursday, Terrelle Pryor will focus on his switch to wide receiver.

But if he makes the team as one of the 53 on the final roster, don’t be at all surprised if Pryor fills the "slash” role he mentioned in the offseason.

Coach Mike Pettine said he wants Pryor to concentrate "1,000 percent” on the move to receiver, but he also sounded intrigued at having a 6-4 option at quarterback who can run like a gazelle.

"I don't think it's fair to Terrelle at this point to try to cast him that way, but I certainly see the benefit as does (offfensive coordinator John DeFilippo) to having that type of athlete on your roster,” Pettine said Monday.

Pryor even could be used as the third quarterback and take up a roster spot as a receiver/quarterback/runner -- aka the slash role.

"I'd rather have a 6-4 guy doing it than a 5-7 guy,” Pettine said, referring to the fact that in some games last season Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel were the third quarterbacks.

Pettine sounded as intrigued as the fans and media about Pryor, who spent time the past month with Josh Gordon, Pittsburgh’s Antonio Brown and other NFL receivers working with Randy Moss.

The switch from quarterback to receiver is not easy, but his coach at Ohio State, Jim Tressel, said if anyone can make the move, Pryor he can.

Pettine was careful to say he doesn't want to get ahead of things. The Browns will begin camp by throwing Pryor into the mix at receiver and see how he does.

"From an athletically-gifted standpoint, he has the skill set to do it," Pettine said. "This is a big guy that can run, and from what I understand has good hands. But we'll see.

"To add him to the roster from our perspective, it was low risk and potential high reward."
