Gurdaspur, Punjab: On a Monday morning, Karamveer Singh decided to make a grocery run to buy the week's supplies of vegetables for his family. His car approached three men standing on the road. And then bullets began raining around him.

The 54-year-old was hit in the shoulder through the windscreen of his car. He kept going, till his white Maruti 800 crashed into a wall. The men ran up to him, dragged him out of the car, then drove away, leaving him bleeding on the road.

Minutes later, they would pull up in the Maruti to a police station complex in Dinanagar, near the border with Pakistan, and spend 12 hours in gunbattle with security forces before being shot dead.

Mr Singh is still in the hospital. His left shoulder has been seriously injured. He has other wounds on his hands and legs.

He told NDTV that after being shot and shoved onto the road, he dragged himself to his house, about 100 metres away.

Mr Singh owns a restaurant on the road where he was shot by the terrorists, who are believed to have been sent to India from Pakistan, which has condemned the first major terror attack in Punjab in over a decade.
