The body of 17-year-old student, who had immolated herself on Saturday after she failed to protect herself from the molesters, was thrown into the river Yamuna allegedly by the police after Samajwadi Party's Hamirpur district president Gyan Singh Yadav pressurised them. They reportedly disposed the body of Rohit Pandey - a youth who died in Sunday's police firing - also in the river.

The girl, a resident of Biwar area of Hamirpur district, took the extreme step after she was harassed by Jitendra Yadav and Bhura Yadav, aides of the district SP chief. There was already a case of loot registered against the duo at the Sumerpur Police Station.

On her way back home from the coaching institute in Bewar, the deceased was thrashed by Jitendra when she reacted against his lewd remarks. She then allegedly poured kerosene and set herself afire.

While participating in a demonstration with the body of their daughter, the parents of the victim were also forcefully taken away by the police. The police also opened fire at the protesters.

"The police forcefully took away the body of our daughter from the protest site. Her post-mortem was conducted in a hurry and the body was thrown into the river. The police then took me and one of my relatives to the Bewar Police Station and assaulted us. They wanted us to give a written statement that my daughter was never molested," said Raj Kumar Khare, the victim's father.

Khare and his relative were let off when a large number of BJP leaders, including Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, reached there and asked the police to produce them before her.

Interestingly, after throwing the youth's body into the river, the police later deployed divers to fish it out, but failed miserably.

Some officers developed cold feet after Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered a magisterial probe.

Hamirpur District Magistrate Sandhya Tiwari, who had allegedly ordered the police to open fire on the protesters without issuing any warning, has now shifted the blame on Sub-Divisional Magistrate Praveen Agrawal.

"It was Agrawal who asked the police to open fire on the protesters. A probe has been ordered into the incident," she said.
