Wolfsburg have told Manchester City : We do not need your money.

City want the German club’s £50million-rated Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after splashing out more than £60m on Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts .

But Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs, whose club are backed by car giants Volkswagen, said: “We are not a selling club, we don’t need the money.

“And in the project of Wolfsburg we want to compete one day with Bayern Munich and you need these kind of players.

“But on the other hand we have to handle it seriously and respect the interests of the player and on the other side he has to respect the interests of the club.

“Firstly, we don’t need the money and then we are not in the situation to be in negotiations with another club.”

Winger De Bruyne, 24 , is contracted to Wolfsburg until 2019 after joining for £18m from Chelsea in January 2014.

And his Wolfsburg teammate Andre Schurrle is praying they can hold onto the 24-year-old.

Former Chelsea winger Schurrle said: “He is a great player.

"He is playing well, he can pass, score goals, he assists so I hope he stays for sure because he would be a big loss for us but it is his decision and we will see how it goes.”
