16-year-old Andrew Orischak was competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship — the biggest junior amateur tournament in the U.S. — last week when he decided to make a bet with Holly Sonders: If he won the tournament, Sonders would have to go to prom with him. Sonders agreed.

He made that bet before his quarterfinal match, which he won. He then followed with a victory in his semi final match. Then, in the final, Orischak was 5 up with eight holes to play. He was going to win! He was actually going to go to the prom with Holly Sonders!

But he didn’t. A late collapse handed victory to his opponent. Heartbreaking, but if it’s any consolation, Sonders agreed to go with him to prom anyway.

It seems to be working.
