Parents die saving daughter being run over

JAIPUR: Even after being hit by a truck, a couple managed to rescue their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter from being run over by a van and lost their lives in this effort in Kanota area on Sunday night. Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the bike on which the family was riding was hit by a truck. They fell to the ground. When the couple saw a van approaching from the opposite direction, they threw the child away to save her while they were run over by the van.They died on the spot.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Vijay Gupta, (34) and his wife Bittu alias Puja (28) were residents of Shashtri Nagar's Panipech area. Vijay was a clerk at Jhotwara panchayat samiti office. The couple along with their daughter Savi was returning home after the birthday party of Vijay's sister when the mishap occurred near Prem Nagar flyover around 10.30 pm.
"A truck hit their bike from behind. They fell to the ground. A van was approaching from the opposite direction. The girl was lying on the road. During preliminary investigation it has come up that the couple realized that the girl would be run over by the van. They pushed her away, but they themselves were run over by the van. They died on the spot. The girl didn't sustain any serious injuries," said a police officer.
The van driver escaped from the spot leaving the vehicle behind. The police seized the van and launched a search for the driver. The bodies of Vijay and his wife were handed over to their family members after a postmortem examination.
