Masters of Sex GIF and a Graf: Freud Is Dead

Last night, Masters and Johnson gave Freud a run for his money.
Freud is Dead
Showtime

Although it does pick up a bit of the Virginia-balances-life-and-work thread from its previous installment, last night's Masters of Sex largely focused on the, well, response that Human Sexual Response is getting. Religious folks condemn it. High school students enjoy it. Makers of perfumes, "hand massagers," and Playboy want to harness its power. And people who actually study the science of sex love it. While reading the many reactions in various journals, Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) comes across this wonderful passage: "I can confidently say that even if god is not dead, Dr. Freud certainly is." Virginia responds by saying, "We killed Freud." The ever-arrogant Bill Masters (Michael Sheen) simply notes, "But we knew that years ago." Freud's work didn't die—and despite the efforts of Showtime, it's likely he's still more familiar to people than Masters and Johnson—but it's nice to see them give him a run for his money.
