A supermarket worker has found what's believed to be cocaine with a street value of £600,000 in a box of bananas.

The Tesco employee was unpacking the fruit shipped from South America on Wednesday when he discovered five bags of white powder.

Police are investigating after being called to the superstore in Wokingham, Berkshire.

They believe the packages contain Class A drugs.

Tesco says most of its bananas are imported from Costa Rica to distribution centres throughout the UK before being sent out to stores.

The supermarket says it's helping the police with their investigation.

Drugs being hidden in food shipments is not unusual.

In April last year cocaine with an estimated street value of £25m was found in a consignment of bananas from Colombia at a Kent warehouse.

Then in December, drugs thought to be worth £40m were found in another shipment of the fruit from Colombia in Portsmouth.

And it's happened in Germany too.

In May more than £11m worth of the drug turned up in boxes of bananas delivered to 13 stores in Berlin.

And £5m of cocaine turned up in the same place in January.
