In 1984, Assistant Sub Inspector Achhar Singh was killed by militants in Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran while on a combing operation. His son Baljit was recruited as an ASI on compassionate grounds.
On Monday, Baljit, who had become SP (Detective), met the same fate as his father — he was shot in the head during the firefight at Dinanagar.

Baljit is survived by his wife, two daughters and son. From Dhandowal in Kapurthala, the family lives in Preet Nagar in Kapurthala. “We never imagined that 31 years later, he would meet the same fate as his father,” Vandana, a family friend said.

She said Baljit and his wife, Kulwant Kaur, had been preparing for the wedding of a daughter who got engaged recently. “He was a thorough professional, devoted to his work. He always led from the front. Even today, he was doing just that,” she said.
His wife, who has a heart condition, was told that he had met with an accident and was critical. “She perhaps realised that he was no more. She has gone into shock,” another family friend said.
